Ratings & Tasting Notes:
Vinous – The 1966 Talbot has a bucolic and perhaps feral bouquet with menthol and humidor aromas billowing from the glass. It is not intense but it is attractive. The palate has a commendable fleshiness, uncommon in this vintage with citrus-infused cherries and blackberry, hints of Provençal herbs and a finely tuned, quite tensile finish. This is a solid, thoroughly enjoyable Talbot to drink now. Tasted blind at a private lunch in London. (NM)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Château Talbot is a distinguished Fourth Growth estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. With a history stretching back to the 15th century and named after the English commander Sir John Talbot, the property has been under the ownership of the Cordier family since 1917. Known for its expansive 110-hectare vineyard—one of the largest in the Médoc—Château Talbot’s wines are celebrated for their classic Saint-Julien profile. They are typically a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, offering a generous and elegant character with notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and a velvety texture. While some past vintages have been criticized for inconsistency, recent investments and a renewed focus on vineyard and winemaking practices have led to an increase in quality, producing wines that are approachable in their youth but also capable of aging gracefully. The estate also produces a well-regarded second wine, Connétable de Talbot, and one of the Médoc’s oldest dry white wines, Caillou Blanc.
