Blackberries with some black tea and perfumes. Full-bodied with fine, dusty tannins and seamless texture. So long and consistent. 60% whole cluster fermentation with 14 months in oak casks. Glorious, tactile wine. Drinkable now, but better in three or four years.

The 2019 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae is made with grapes from parcel 6 of the Adrianna Vineyard, Uco Valley, planted in Gualtallary at a height of 4,400 feet and aged for 18 months in new and second use French barrels. The pure, intense and precisely judged nose offers delicate fruit such as sweet and sour cherry alongside hints of lavender and violet and faint herbal aromas. It’s relaxed and juicy on the palate with subtle, finely grained tannins and a little chalk. The finish is elongated by fruity flavors. The year helped with the nuanced freshness in this Malbec. (JH)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Catena Zapata is universally recognized as the pioneer of high-altitude viticulture in Mendoza, Argentina, and the Adrianna Vineyard is their crown jewel. Located in the Gualtallary sub-region of the Uco Valley, this vineyard sits at an astonishing altitude of approximately 4,800 feet (1,450 meters), qualifying it as one of the world’s most extreme high-altitude sites.
The ‘Fortuna Terrae’ Parcel:
‘Fortuna Terrae’ (Latin for “Fortune of the Earth”) is a specific, meticulously studied block within the Adrianna Vineyard. Its defining characteristic is its soil composition: deep, loamy topsoil mixed with significant concentrations of calcium carbonate (limestone) on the subsoil. This mineral-rich structure is the key to the wine’s unique profile, promoting excellent water drainage and imparting a distinctive tension and freshness to the resulting Malbec.
Style and Profile:
This single-vineyard Malbec represents the purest expression of cool-climate, high-altitude Argentinian wine. Unlike the heavy, often jammy style associated with lower-altitude Malbec, ‘Fortuna Terrae’ is defined by its elegance, precision, and mineral backbone.
Aromatics & Palate: It offers complex layers of dark red and blue fruits (blueberry, cassis), intertwined with savory notes of violet, mint, and crushed stone.
Structure: It is intensely concentrated yet remarkably focused, displaying powerful fine-grained tannins and a brilliant, long-lasting acidity imparted by the cool mountain climate. It is a wine built for extended aging, often compared structurally to great Old World wines like the premium wines from Bordeaux.
