Screaming Eagle is the original California cult wine and still the most sought-after. Jean Phillips, a local real estate agent, bought a parcel in Oakville in 1986 and sold the fruit to neighbouring producers before deciding to make wine herself. The first release, roughly two hundred cases of the 1992, was rated 99 points by Robert Parker, and the estate’s reputation was made overnight. Stanley Kroenke acquired the property in 2006 and owns it today; Nick Gislason has been winemaker for over a decade. Of the 57-acre estate, 40 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc — and a few rows to Sauvignon Blanc, in the northwest corner replanted after the change of ownership. That handful of rows is the entire source of this wine.

The Sauvignon Blanc began as a private wine for the family and was first offered to the mailing list in 2010. It has been made in tiny quantities ever since, and is harder to obtain than the Cabernet that made the estate famous. The 2019 is 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc from those same western rows, in a long, even Napa growing season that gave wines of precision and freshness. Expect lemon zest, white peach and green apple layered with citrus blossom, crushed stone and a herbal lift, then a palate that is sleek yet textural, carrying ripe orchard fruit over vibrant acidity and a saline mineral core. The finish is long and mouthwatering. Serve barely chilled rather than cold — over-chilling mutes it considerably.
