Cult Wines International Notes:
The prestigious Champagne house of Philipponnat traces its lineage back to 1522 and is renowned for its commitment to powerful, terroir-driven Champagnes, exemplified by its famous single-vineyard, Clos des Goisses. The Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime is the estate’s homage to its founding year and a showcase of Grand Cru blending excellence, standing alongside the house’s other prestige wines. Sourced from exceptional vineyards, including the historic lieu-dit Le Léon in Aÿ (Pinot Noir) and choice Chardonnay parcels like Cramant, the wine is typically a Pinot Noir-dominant blend (often around 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay). Philipponnat utilizes partial vinification in oak barrels and generally avoids malolactic conversion to maintain the wine’s intrinsic freshness and ageability, releasing the Cuvée 1522 only after long-term aging on the lees.
The 2002 vintage is widely considered one of the finest of the last few decades in Champagne, offering a blend of concentration and vibrant acidity perfectly suited to the Cuvée 1522 style. This Extra Brut expression (with a low dosage, typically approx 4g/L) benefits from the ripe, structured character of the vintage, often exhibiting great purity and volume. After extended aging, the 2002 develops complex aromatics of almond, white peach, toasted brioche, and spice, underpinned by a taut, powerful structure and a distinctly chalky, mineral finish. Praised as a “young powerhouse” upon release, the 2002 Cuvée 1522 is recognized for its tremendous aging potential, evolving into a deeply layered and concentrated Champagne that beautifully captures the essence of a great year.
