Very attractive floral and fresh aromas to the plums and cherries, following through to the palate. Flavorful and gorgeous, yet lively and focused.

The Argiano 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of considerable bandwidth with lots of dark fruit, rich plum and spice. It carries medium fruit weight and concentration that proves more than enough to surround and soften the spicy oak notes and toast that also play an important role in this hot-vintage Brunello. The results are plump and slightly round, but you also get the acidity and the tannic structure of an age-worthy Sangiovese. Organically farmed fruit is selected from across the best parcels of the estate, and some of the vines are up to 55 years old. Production is 130,000 bottles, and I would recommend setting this bottle aside for near- to medium-term drinking. (ML)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Argiano is one of the oldest and most respected estates in Montalcino, Tuscany, with winemaking history dating back to the century. It is revered for producing one of the most classic and long-lived expressions of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, a wine made exclusively from the Sangiovese Grosso clone (locally called Brunello).
Terroir and Style: The Argiano vineyards are strategically located on the cooler, more elevated southwestern slopes of the Montalcino hill. This placement provides excellent sunlight and ventilation, resulting in grapes that achieve superb ripeness while retaining crucial acidity and freshness. Argiano’s signature style is one of elegance and finesse over sheer power, often showing a finer structure compared to Brunellos from the hotter, southern regions.
Tasting Profile: Brunello requires a minimum of five years of aging (with two in oak) before release, ensuring the Argiano Brunello is complex and ready to drink, yet capable of further evolution. On the palate, it delivers concentrated flavors of bright red cherry, plum, and raspberry, complemented by secondary notes of tobacco leaf, leather, licorice, and Tuscan earth. Its fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity make it incredibly balanced and food-friendly.
Global Recognition: Argiano has experienced a dramatic resurgence in quality and international focus in recent years, reinforcing its position as a global standard-bearer for traditional, high-quality Brunello. It remains a benchmark for showing the purity and age-worthiness of Sangiovese Grosso.
