Earthy aromas of bark, sand, truffles, graphite, rust, terracotta and sandalwood rise up from the deep with Burgundian poise; fruitier orange zest and preserved lemons glimmer in their wake, while riper incense and tar lurk in this dense forest of aromas. Physics itself gives way as the line between reduction and oxidation is blurred. There’s such richness to the center palate, but the fruit there is vivacious and elegant, swaddled in robust but generous tannins that breach the outermost reaches of the mouth. The finish is hauntingly long, the after effects of the acidity unworldly. This is certainly in a quiet, reserved stage of evolution, and will need time to fully mature in bottle. Drink in 2025.

A concentrated red, with intense flavors of black cherry, plum, violet, stony mineral and wild herbs. Ample flesh covers the dense matrix of tannins, but this retains plenty of structure and should develop well. Offers a lingering, salty aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2040. 4,000 cases made, 730 cases imported. (BS)
Cult Wines International Notes:
The Renieri estate is a boutique winery founded in and located on the south side of the Montalcino hill, near the historic abbey of Sant’Antimo. While a relatively younger label compared to historic producers, Renieri has quickly established itself as a source of powerful and complex Brunello di Montalcino, made from the Sangiovese Grosso grape.
The Southern Terroir: Renieri’s distinct profile is largely defined by its location in the southernmost part of the appellation, specifically in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone. This area is warmer and experiences a higher concentration of sunlight, allowing the Sangiovese grapes to achieve exceptional phenolic maturity and richness. The vineyards are characterized by stony, clay-rich soils which naturally restrict vigor, leading to low yields and highly concentrated fruit.
Tasting Profile and Style: The Renieri Brunello is known for its intensity, structure, and opulence. In contrast to the lighter, more aromatic wines from the north, Renieri expresses darker, riper fruit notes of black cherry, black plum, and dried fig, backed by savory undertones of dark chocolate, espresso, and sweet tobacco. The wine typically displays a dense, layered texture and powerful, integrated tannins, making it a Brunello built to age, often requiring significant time in the cellar to fully soften and evolve.
Winemaking: The winemaking at Renieri balances modern expertise with respect for tradition. After fermentation, the wine undergoes the required aging period (typically months) in a mix of traditional large Slavonian oak botti and smaller French oak barriques, lending it complexity and polish without overpowering the fruit.
