Ratings & Tasting notes:
94 points Wine Spectator
This Port shows the essence of freshly crushed grapes. It is as dark as black ink, with a very closed nose, very full-bodied and extremely tannic, with masses of fruit flavors. (JS, Web-1989)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Quinta do Noval Nacional is widely considered one of the world’s most exceptional and rarest vintage ports. Produced by the historic Quinta do Noval estate in Portugal’s Douro Valley, the wine’s name “Nacional” refers to the fact that it is made exclusively from ungrafted vines (vides francas), which are native to the estate. This small, 2.5-hectare plot is the only one of its kind in the Douro, making Nacional a truly unique and highly sought-after product.
The ungrafted vines are believed to produce grapes with an extraordinary concentration and complexity, resulting in a wine of immense power, depth, and structure. Nacional is only produced in declared vintage years when the quality is deemed exceptional, and even then, in very limited quantities. Its production is so scarce that it is often sold at auction for record-breaking prices.
In the glass, Quinta do Noval Nacional is renowned for its intense, dark ruby color. The nose is a captivating blend of concentrated black fruit, violet, and spice, with hints of cocoa and mint. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with layers of rich black cherry, plum, and liquorice, balanced by firm, silky tannins. The finish is incredibly long and persistent, a testament to its aging potential.
This vintage port is an icon among wine collectors and enthusiasts. It is not merely a drink, but a living piece of history and a profound expression of the unique terroir of Quinta do Noval.
