“The 2020 Baron de Brane is a heady, exuberant wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, mocha, chocolate, lavender, spice and new leather are all beautifully delineated. Fine tannins, lifted aromatics and succulent fruit are all very nicely balanced. The 2020 is quite flashy yet retains a good bit of energy, too, with floral top notes that lift the finish nicely. It’s a gorgeous second wine from Henri Lurton and Brane-Cantenac. Drinking Window: 2024-2035” – Antonio Galloni

“Roses, smoke, spice and red currants form the core of this forward, medium-bodied, silky textured wine that is already showing well. The refined palate, with all of its supple, creamy red fruits hits everything just right. This is perfect to enjoy on release while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. This is a good example of a baby Brane Cantenac. Drink from 2023-2034.” – Jeff Leve

“Attractive aromas of dark and blue fruit, some violets, walnut and graphite. It’s medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and a delicate, vivid blue fruit character. Chalky finish. Try after 2024.”

“An exceptionally good second wine, succulent black cherry and damson fruit, easy to approach with vibrant mint notes and silky, well-textured tannins, 15% new oak. Good density.” – Jane Anson

Cult Wines International Notes:
Baron de Brane is the highly regarded second wine of Château Brane-Cantenac, a renowned Second Growth (Deuxième Cru Classé) estate located in the prestigious Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France. It is named in honor of the former owner, Baron Jacques-Edouard de Rèstagnac, who dramatically improved the estate in the 18th century.
The purpose of Baron de Brane is to provide a more approachable, earlier-drinking expression of the Brane-Cantenac terroir, using fruit from younger vines or specific parcels that don’t meet the strict criteria for the Grand Vin. It is primarily a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, often with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
This wine embodies the elegant and feminine style for which Margaux is famous. It typically exhibits a beautiful, aromatic nose featuring perfumed notes of violets and rose petals, intertwined with soft red and black fruit (cherry and blackcurrant). On the palate, it is medium-bodied and velvety, with supple tannins that make it enjoyable in its youth while still retaining the structure and freshness required for moderate aging. Baron de Brane offers exceptional value, acting as a gateway to the quality and finesse of its celebrated parent estate.
