Ratings & Tasting Notes:

96 points Wine Enthusiast

This is now performing as one of the top Margaux estates. Their latest release shows structure, elegant black fruits and rich tannins. Densely textured and vibrantly fruity, the wine has a fine future. Drink from 2027. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

95 points Decanter

Deep and generous blackberry fruits and rich chocolate, there is good balance here with depth and interest and a ton of flavour. Really good stuff, with juice and a drive forward through the palate. (JA)

A quintessential Margaux as well as one of the finest wines I’ve tasted from this estate, the 2018 Château Brane-Cantenac is based on 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, all aged in 70% new French oak. Beautiful cassis and mulberry fruits as well as notes of leafy tobacco, spice, cedarwood, and spring flowers emerge from the glass. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it has loads of fruit, a seamless texture, and a good spine of acidity. Give bottles 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 30 years or more. 95+

95 points James Suckling

Aromas of mushroom, meat, bark and iodine with blackberries and blackcurrants, following through to a full body with firm, creamy tannins that give structure and form to the wine. Tight on the finish. Long and persistent with presence. Drink after 2025.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Château Brane-Cantenac is a prestigious Second Growth estate located in the esteemed Margaux appellation of Bordeaux. It is situated on one of the finest gravel terraces in the region, a terroir known for producing wines of exceptional finesse, elegance, and aromatic complexity. The estate’s history dates back to the 18th century, and it has long been celebrated for its classic expression of Margaux.

The wine is primarily a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides structure and a framework for aging, and Merlot, which contributes a soft, lush texture. Smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also used to add layers of complexity and color. This thoughtful blend results in a wine that beautifully balances power with grace.

In the glass, Château Brane-Cantenac typically presents a deep, ruby-red color. The nose is a captivating medley of black cherry, cassis, and raspberry, with sophisticated undertones of cedar, tobacco leaf, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, showcasing silky, refined tannins and a core of concentrated dark fruit. Its hallmark is a long, persistent finish that echoes with subtle spice and a refreshing minerality.

Château Brane-Cantenac is a wine of great charm and exceptional aging potential. It is highly regarded by connoisseurs for its ability to evolve over many years, developing additional depth and nuance. It stands as a prime example of the classic Margaux style, cherished for its subtle power and undeniable elegance.
