A fantastic base cuvee, the 2009 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a blend of 75% tank aged Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Vaccarese. It displays a meaty, perfumed, and spice-laced bouquet of red fruits, licorice, and mineral, medium to full body, a superb, silky texture, admirable balance, and plenty of length on the finish. While not as deep or rich as the Vieilles Vignes, it has solid concentration and a very drinkable, delicious style.
Cult Wines International Notes:
Founded in 1900 by Edmund Tacussel, Clos Saint-Jean has evolved from a historic family estate into one of the most prestigious names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While the winery began commercial bottling as early as 1910, its rise to international acclaim accelerated in 2002 when brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel took the helm. Partnering with the legendary oenologist Philippe Cambie, the Maurels modernized production while maintaining deep respect for their unique terroir, characterized by the massive pebbles of the La Crau plateau. These stones act as thermal regulators, absorbing intense sunlight and radiating heat to the vines during the cool nights.
The 2009 growing season was defined by extreme conditions that produced a powerful and opulent vintage. After a rainy winter restored soil water reserves, the region experienced an exceptionally dry and hot summer, even surpassing the heat records of 2007. Less than 30mm of rain fell between June and mid-September, leading to a rapid and early ripening period. Despite the heat, cool nights helped the grapes retain necessary acidity and freshness. This specific climate resulted in small yields of remarkably healthy, thick-skinned grapes with high concentration and silky tannins. The 2009 Clos Saint-Jean reflects this intensity, offering a rich profile of dark cherry liqueur, licorice, and Mediterranean herbs, showcasing the strength of the vintage alongside the winery’s signature elegance.
