Starting to really come into its own, this is packed full of savoury blackberry, redcurrant and blueberry fruit with layers of liquorice, black chocolate, grilled cedar and a gentle lick of salinity through the finish. Excellent quality, and now starting to open – it was a baby at the 10 years on tasting but has inched open over the past three years. Harvest from October 2-15, with relatively low yields of 34hl/ha. The 2008 Mouton Rothschild checks in as a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot brought up in mostly new barrels. Undeniably one of the top wines in the vintage, it offers a rare opulence and sexiness in its awesome bouquet of crème de cassis, Asian spices, chocolate, and crushed flowers. Deep, full-bodied, powerful, and still young, it fills the mouth with fruit, has sweet tannin, and a great finish. It’s still ruby/plum-colored, with no signs of evolution, but is far from unapproachable and is drinking incredibly well today.

A rich wine, opulent in character. There is power here, with richness of fruit and texture. It is both serious side and exuberant, with its bursting black berry fruits. *Cellar Selection* (RV)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a crown jewel of the Pauillac appellation with a storied history dating back to 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the estate formerly known as Brane-Mouton. The chateau was at the center of a historic revolution led by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who introduced estate bottling in 1924 and spearheaded the artistic tradition of unique annual labels beginning in 1945. His tireless advocacy eventually led to the estate’s unprecedented promotion to First Growth status in 1973.

The 2008 growing season is remembered as a year of resilience and dramatic reversal. The vintage began with a cool, damp spring that delayed the vegetation cycle, followed by a dull and overcast August that required vigilant vineyard management. By early September, prospects seemed difficult due to a lack of sunshine; however, a magnificent Indian summer arrived on September 14 and persisted through late October. This period of dry, golden weather allowed the grapes to achieve optimal phenolic maturity and concentration. The harvest took place between October 2 and October 15, yielding a crop in excellent condition. This late-ripening season produced a wine with remarkable structure, vibrant acidity, and a classic Pauillac aromatic profile of graphite and black fruit. The 2008 label features the artwork of Xu Bing, blending Chinese calligraphy with the Latin alphabet to honor the winery’s global reach.
