Tasted from magnum, Dunnuck calls it a prodigious, flawless wine showing the elegance and seductive hallmark of the estate paired with incredible density, depth and richness. Its still ruby-purple colour is followed by sensational crème de cassis, spring flowers, lead pencil and sandalwood that develop beautifully with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, opulent and seamless, with a multidimensional layered texture, a massive mid-palate, sweet tannins and a finish that won’t quit. Drinking brilliantly with no need to delay gratification, yet set to evolve for another three or four decades. In his words, Bordeaux does not get any better.

The 2000 Margaux kicked off a string of great wines. The aromas are spellbinding, with notes of raspberry and strawberry. The palate is incredibly silky yet structured, with impeccable balance.

Absolutely compelling across two tastings, and composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Parker found its extraordinary seductiveness, complex aromatics and purity indicative of a wine reaching full maturity. Medium-bodied, with layers of concentration, stunning blue, red and black fruits intermixed with spring flowers and a subtle dosage of new oak, and a distinctive personality at once elegant and powerfully substantial. A multidimensional wine that was approachable and drinkable on both occasions, with a healthy opaque bluish-purple colour and, in his estimate, another thirty to forty years of evolution ahead.

Deep garnet with a touch of brick, leaping from the glass with evocative scents of plum preserves, blackberry pie and redcurrant jelly, leading to wafts of dried lavender, powdered cinnamon and tobacco leaf with a hint of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is filled with black fruits and savoury accents, with a velvety texture and seamless freshness, leading to a perfectly balanced, lingering perfume of a finish. The reviewer calls it graceful, flawless perfection.

Château Margaux is the largest of the First Growths and, by long consensus, the most elegant — the reference point for a style built on perfume and finesse rather than power. The estate lies east of the village of Margaux in the Médoc, on the thinnest gravel soils of the region, which vine roots penetrate to remarkable depth. Ranked a First Growth in 1855, the property entered its modern golden era after the Mentzelopoulos family acquired it in 1977, and the partnership between Corinne Mentzelopoulos and estate director Paul Pontallier produced the run of wines on which the château’s present reputation rests.

2000 was the millennium vintage and one of the great Bordeaux years of the modern era, and Margaux marked it with a wine that has drawn perfect scores from four separate publications across fifteen years. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Deep garnet with a touch of brick, it offers crème de cassis, plum preserves, blackberry, redcurrant, raspberry and strawberry over violet and iris, spring flowers, dried lavender, black truffle, clove, cinnamon, sandalwood, lead pencil, tobacco leaf and crushed rock. Medium to full-bodied, opulent and seamless, with a massive mid-palate, velvety texture, sweet refined tannins and a lingering perfumed finish. It took its time to arrive and rewards several hours in the glass, but it is drinking magnificently now, with reviewers giving it decades more.
