Bruno Giacosa is one of the towering figures of Piedmontese winemaking. He joined the family business at fifteen as the third generation of a Langhe winemaking family, and his perfectionism and extraordinary palate helped establish Piedmont among the world’s great wine regions. Working from Neive, he built his reputation over decades on wines made from purchased grapes, then acquired the Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba in 1982. That created the two-label structure collectors know today: estate fruit under the Azienda Agricola Falletto label, and the historic Casa Vinicola wines — this Barbera among them — under the plain Bruno Giacosa label. 1998 was a warm, dry season in the Langhe, part of the celebrated run of late-nineties vintages that made the region’s modern reputation. Barbera, early-ripening and naturally high in acid, thrived: the heat brought ripe cherry and dark-berry concentration while the grape’s acidity held the frame intact. That structure is what has carried this bottle nearly three decades on. Mature Barbera of this pedigree trades primary fruit for dried cherry, autumn leaf, tobacco and savory earth, tannins fully resolved, acidity still lending lift. A rare chance to taste what a great Langhe hand could do with the region’s everyday grape, well past the point most Barbera is ever opened.
