The 1988 Calon-Segur outshines both wines from the more heralded vintages of 1989 and 1990. Deeply colored, superbly balanced, rich and full bodied, it appears to be a worthy candidate for another 15-20 years of longevity. It is a classic example of this chateau’s wine – cedary, very fragrant, with plenty of sweet red and black currant fruit. I should also note that it is surprisingly powerful for the vintage. It gets my nod as the finest Calon-Segur between 1982 and 1995. (RP)

Cult Wines International Notes:

The 1988 Château Calon-Ségur is a celebrated expression of a mature, traditionally styled Third Growth from the Saint-Estèphe appellation, often recognized by the heart on its label. The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux was defined by a long, cool growing season, which resulted in highly structured, firmly tannic wines built for the long haul—a sharp contrast to the lushness of 1982. This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend perfectly embodies its austere, northern Médoc terroir. After decades of aging, the 1988 has shed its youthful hardness, evolving into a complex tapestry of savory cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and damp earth, with a core of dark, slightly dried cassis fruit. While fully mature, it maintains a classic Saint-Estèphe framework, offering firm acidity and a pronounced tannic grip on the lengthy finish, appealing directly to collectors who cherish structure and traditional elegance.
