Here is an example of why a second wine is well worth buying in a great vintage. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the 1990, and I couldn’t find any to purchase, but I bought plenty of the 1982, although I never dreamed it would be drinking so great at age 27. Much lighter around the edge than its bigger sibling, it exhibits an explosive nose of charcoal, black fruits, herbs, and soil undertones. Full-bodied and fleshy with no hard edges (which is exactly the way it performed over the last 10-15 years)… (6/2009)

The 1982 vintage of Les Forts de Latour is outstanding and is drinking with style and grace at the present time. The bouquet shows a bit more red fruit in this vintage than is typical of this bottling, soaring from the glass in a fine constellation of red and black cherries, a touch of raspberry, tobacco leaf, dark soil tones, cigar smoke, still a whisper of weedy Cabernet overtones and a deft framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full and sappy at the core, with excellent focus and complexity, suave, modest tannins, gorgeous transparency and a lovely grip on the very long and classy finish. I love this vintage of Les Forts. (1/2020)

The 1982 Les Fort de Latour has a wonderful bouquet that roots your feet to the spot: black fruit, graphite, smoke and cedar with brilliant delineation and poise, despite the intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, with dense and quite robust tannin, huge weight and density. Honest to God, I actually thought this might be the Grand Vin before its identity was revealed. It dovetails a savory, black truffle and gravel tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. Very impressive. (NM) (7/2018)

What a wine. Dark ruby color, with a hint of garnet. Ripe berry, with a hint of raisin, licorice and spice. Full-bodied and very concentrated, with velvety tannins and a long, ripe fruit finish. (JS) (11/1998)
