Cult Wines International Notes:

Chateau Clarke, located in the Listrac-Medoc appellation of Bordeaux, carries a storied history that took a definitive turn in 1973 when Baron Edmond de Rothschild purchased the estate. Named after the Irish family that acquired the property in the 18th century, the winery underwent a massive restoration under the Baron’s vision. He prioritized quality by replanting vineyards and modernizing the cellars, aiming to elevate the estate to the standards of its more famous neighbors in the Haut-Medoc. The 1982 vintage remains a landmark year for the property, marking a period where the Baron’s investments began to yield exceptional results, coinciding with what many consider the most famous Bordeaux vintage of the twentieth century.

The 1982 growing season was characterized by nearly perfect conditions that favored both the vines and the winemakers. A mild spring led into a warm, consistent summer with ample sunshine, allowing for an early and uniform flowering. The summer heat was significant but tempered by just enough rain to prevent drought stress, leading to a concentrated and healthy crop. Harvest conditions were ideal, with dry, warm days that permitted picking at peak phenolic ripeness. For Chateau Clarke, which features a higher percentage of Merlot than many of its neighbors due to its clay-limestone soils, the 1982 season produced fruit with incredible opulence and structure. This vintage is remembered for its plush texture and the remarkable balance between ripe fruit and the estate’s signature earthy complexity.
