Ratings & Tasting Notes:

99 points — Wine Enthusiast
“Drop-dead gorgeous,” with blue flowers, cedar, red currant, raspberry, white pepper and a balsamic note. A Cellar Selection, to drink 2018–2032.

95 points — James Suckling
Lavender, minerals and black currant turning to blackberry on a full-bodied palate with refined tannins and a long finish. “This is all about delicacy, finesse and grace.”

94 points — Wine & Spirits
Ripe yet fresh after a long, hot summer with cool nights, with black currant, red raspberry, thyme, toasted nuts and spice from two years in French oak. Velvety, with graphite notes and firm tannins.

94 points — Vinous
Dark, dense and powerful, with black cherry jam, cloves and new leather. Unusually deep and concentrated, needing considerable bottle age.

93 points — Wine Spectator
Rich and intense, with vanilla, toast and black cherry wrapped in stern tannins, finishing long and elegant. Best from 2019 through 2032.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Sassicaia is the wine that started the Super Tuscan movement. Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the stony soils of Tenuta San Guido at Bolgheri in the 1940s, at first for family use, and the first commercial vintage was released in the early 1970s. Its success led to Bolgheri Sassicaia becoming one of the only Italian DOCs devoted to a single estate.

The 2012 blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Cabernet Franc and spent about two years in French oak. A long, hot summer with cool nights gave ripe yet fresh fruit: blue flowers, lavender, cedar, black and red currant, raspberry and balsamic notes over refined, firm tannins. One leading critic awarded it 99 points.
