Chateau Prieure-Lichine, located in the Cantenac commune of the Margaux appellation, has a history rooted in the Benedictine priory of Cantenac. For centuries, the monks produced wine for their own consumption and local use until the French Revolution led to the estate’s seizure and subsequent sale. Its modern identity was forged in 1951 when it was purchased by the legendary Alexis Lichine, often called the Pope of Wine. Lichine was a tireless promoter of Bordeaux and spent decades expanding the estate by purchasing small parcels of land from neighboring chateaux. His efforts were instrumental in elevating the quality and global reputation of the property, which remains the only Margaux estate to hold vineyards in all five communes of the appellation.
The 1983 growing season in Margaux is widely regarded as one of the finest of the decade, often outperforming the celebrated 1982 vintage in this specific region. The year began with a damp spring that necessitated careful vineyard management, but the weather shifted dramatically in the summer. A hot, dry August provided excellent conditions for ripening, followed by an ideal September that allowed the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity. Harvesting at Prieure-Lichine took place under warm, sunny skies, resulting in fruit with deep concentration and balanced acidity. The 1983 vintage is remembered for its classic Margaux elegance, displaying refined tannins and a complex aromatic profile that has allowed it to age gracefully for decades.
