  • 100 POINTS JEB DUNNUCK “The epitome of class and elegance, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon offers pure crème de cassis, liquid violets, crushed stone, graphite, and cedar notes on the nose. It’s full-bodied on the palate, with remarkably polished tannins, flawless overall balance, and incredible length. This is never the biggest or richest wine in the vintage, yet the sheer level of purity, structure, and depth is absolutely incredible. Compared to the 2021, this is less powerful and made in a more elegant style, yet it’s every bit as profound and compelling. It builds beautifully with time in the glass and already offers pleasure yet won’t hit prime time for a decade and will cruise for 50+ years.”
  • No scores yet from Parker, Suckling or Galloni.
  • About the 2023 Napa Growing Season: The 2023 growing season in Napa Valley is being hailed by many vintners as a “vintage of a lifetime” or the “unicorn vintage.” It was characterized by a dramatic departure from the heatwaves and droughts of the previous decade, offering a return to a more “classic” or European style of viticulture.1. A Wet & Cold Start: The season began with historic rainfall—some areas saw up to 58 inches—which completely replenished reservoirs and saturated the soil. This was followed by a very chilly spring, which delayed budbreak by about two weeks. This late start proved beneficial, as it protected the vines from the early spring frosts that had damaged crops in 2021 and 2022.2. The “Endless” Growing Season: 2023 became one of the longest growing seasons in recent memory. The summer was unusually mild, with temperatures rarely exceeding 90°F. Notably, the valley saw almost no major heat spikes; some growers reported only a single day over 100°F the entire year.Slow Ripening: The lack of intense heat allowed the grapes to mature slowly and steadily. The “Hang Time” Luxury: Because the weather remained clear and cool through the fall, winemakers weren’t forced to pick early due to heat or approaching storms. Many didn’t harvest their Cabernet Sauvignon until late October or even mid-November.3. Quality: The resulting wines are noted for their vibrant acidity, lower alcohol levels, and “supple” tannins. While they have the classic Napa fruit profile, they are described as having more finesse, elegance, and “Bordelais” (Bordeaux-like) characteristics compared to the “fruit bombs” of hotter years.
