Cult Wines International Notes:
Taylor Fladgate is the oldest Port house still in continuous operation, founded in 1692 and remaining one of the last major Port producers still independently owned rather than absorbed into a large drinks conglomerate. The house is widely regarded as the benchmark producer for aged tawny Port, drawing on extensive reserves of cask-aged wine held in its cellars, or “lodges,” along the Douro riverbank in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Unlike a Vintage Port, which comes from a single exceptional harvest, a 20 Year Old Tawny is a blend of many vintages, aged for decades in seasoned oak casks that gradually shift the wine’s color from deep purple to its characteristic amber “tawny” hue. This extended cask aging concentrates the wine and develops the nutty, spiced, dried-fruit complexity tawny Port is known for, while the blending across vintages ensures a consistent, refined house style year after year — the product of decades of careful reserve management rather than any single growing season.
