Ratings & Tasting Notes:

91 points — James Suckling, June 2022
A silky Champagne with aromas of apricot pie, shortcrust, croissants, lemon curd and seashells. Very fine, soft bubbles, with a gentle salinity beneath the pastry notes and a soft finish.

90 points — Wine Enthusiast, December 2020
With a high proportion of the two Pinots in the blend, this is a ripe and floral Champagne. The reviewer noted this bottling carried some age, which had produced a touch of toast alongside the crisp, dry texture. An attractive, fruity and mature Champagne, ready to drink.

90 points — Wine Spectator, December 2020
Meyer lemon peel, poached apricot and pastry cream tightly meshed with a mineral underpinning and racy acidity in a vivacious Champagne. Creamy finish.

90 points — Decanter, October 2020
A touch of reduction plays on the waxy nose. Peaches and nectarine on the palate with citric fruits and a hint of sour honey, creamy and subtle yet resonant. Panel tasting.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Perrier-Jouët was founded in Épernay in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose Adélaïde Jouët, and the house has spent two centuries building a style defined by floral delicacy and Chardonnay finesse rather than power. Its most consequential moment came in 1846, when it released Cuvée K, dosed at under five percent sugar at a time when champagnes routinely carried up to forty. That wine is the ancestor of the dry style the world now calls brut, and Grand Brut is its direct descendant and the house’s signature cuvée. The blend draws on all three Champagne varieties, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in roughly equal measure with Chardonnay, and rests around three years in the chalk cellars beneath Épernay before release.

This is an older bottling rather than current stock, and that changes the wine in ways worth understanding. Non-vintage Champagne is built to be drunk on release, but bottles kept in good conditions continue to evolve in glass, trading the bright citrus and white flowers of youth for something rounder and deeper. Expect a deeper gold in the glass, a softer and finer mousse, and a nose that has moved toward toasted brioche, roasted nuts, honey and dried apricot over the house’s floral signature. The palate follows: less crisp, more textural, with the acidity now supporting rather than leading. A bottle for someone curious about what age does to Champagne. Serve cool, not cold, in a white wine glass.
