Velvety and dense, showing enchanting approachability even at this early stage. There are forward, sweet aromas of red and black plum, cassis, and bramble on the nose, with a distinct floral edge and a hint of liquorice. There is enough extract to suggest that, despite its approachability, this will age for decades to come. Made with grapes from two well-placed parcels in the centre of Chambertin, running from the bottom nearly to the top of the slope. Drinking Window 2026 – 2060. (CC)

Trapet’s 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru is a profound wine in the making, and it can keeps company with vintage’s finest. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cherries and cassis, complemented by notions of raw cocoa, blood orange, smoked meats, rich soil tones and spices, it’s full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with a weightless, elegant profile despite its prodigious concentration, its structuring tannins entirely concealed in an ample core of lively, vibrant fruit. My tasting with Jean-Louis Trapet was one of my most exciting visits during three months traversing the Côte d’Or, and I couldn’t be more excited about the ongoing renaissance at this Gevrey-Chambertin benchmark. Energized by the increasing involvement of his sons, a viticultural revolution is underway. (WK)

The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru has an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar and raspberry, interlaced with wilted rose petals and light ferrous aromas. The palate is very supple and voluminous, fleshy and generous, but maybe not quite as pixelated as the Latricières-Chambertin. It fans out wonderfully, though, and the lightly spiced finish just misses the intellect of Latricières. This represents a very serious Chambertin, and I would not be surprised if it lands at the top of my banded score. (NM)

This is aromatically similar to the Latricières though it’s even cooler with a bit more earth, floral and spice influences. There is outstanding power to the bigger, richer and more concentrated big-bodied flavors that also brim with minerality before terminating in a balanced, overtly austere and hugely long finale. This too is a classically styled Chambertin and the quality is superb though this is very much a buy it and forget you own it wine. In a word, marvelous. *Don’t miss!*
Cult Wines International Notes:
Domaine Trapet Père et Fils is one of the most venerable names in Gevrey-Chambertin, boasting a history that spans seven generations. The estate’s prestige was firmly established in the early 20th century by Arthur Trapet, who amassed significant holdings in the region’s top Grand Crus. Today, under the visionary leadership of Jean-Louis Trapet, the domaine has become a global leader in biodynamic viticulture, having fully converted its 15 hectares of vines in the 1990s. The crown jewel of their portfolio is the Chambertin Grand Cru, where the family owns nearly two hectares of prime parcels. Trapet’s approach focuses on “gentle” winemaking—using high proportions of whole-cluster fermentation and minimal new oak—to emphasize the profound, ethereal elegance of the fruit over sheer power, a philosophy that has returned the domaine to the very top tier of Burgundy producers.
The 2019 growing season in Burgundy was a year of exceptional quality defined by concentration and “solar” energy. The cycle began with a mild winter followed by a cool, damp spring, which led to some frost damage and an uneven flowering that naturally reduced yields. However, the summer was characterized by persistent heat and dry conditions, creating small, thick-skinned berries with an incredible ratio of solids to juice. At Domaine Trapet, the biodynamic health of the vines allowed them to resist hydric stress, preserving a vital acidity that is often lost in hot years. Harvesting took place in mid-September under perfect conditions, resulting in a Chambertin that perfectly marries the richness of a warm vintage with the crystalline purity and mineral tension that are the hallmarks of the Trapet style.
