Ratings & Tasting Notes:

100 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent

Perrotti-Brown described a deep garnet-purple wine with “fragrant notes of red roses, sandalwood, and blueberry pie” alongside hints of fertile loam, menthol, licorice, and dark chocolate. She called the full-bodied palate packed with layer upon layer of floral, blue fruit, and mineral notes, framed by “very firm, very ripe tannins” and finishing long and perfumed.

98 points James Suckling

Suckling praised aromas of blackberries, black cherries, spices, orange peel, and chocolate leading into a full-bodied palate with round, juicy tannins and hints of hazelnut on the close. He called it “savory and juicy,” adding that it’s already “elegant and fine” and seductive.

98 points Decanter

Decanter matched that score, continuing its praise for the vineyard’s site-driven character — a 3.6-hectare parcel at the base of Howell Mountain that Woodbridge’s early consulting winemaker once compared to Pomerol’s Pétrus for its clay-over-gravel structure.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Hundred Acre was founded in 2000 by Jayson Woodbridge, a former investment banker from Canada who, after an epiphany while walking through a vineyard in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, set out to build one of Napa’s most uncompromising cult Cabernet houses under the motto “stand amongst the very best or not at all.” His first vineyard purchase was a roughly nine-acre, gently rising site at the base of Howell Mountain east of St. Helena, originally christened “Kayli Morgan” — a name combining his daughter Morgan’s name with that of a former business partner’s daughter. After buying out that partner, Woodbridge renamed the site Morgan’s Way in her honor alone. The vineyard, planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon since 1996, has earned Hundred Acre’s wines more than twenty perfect 100-point scores from critics over the years, cementing the estate’s reputation as one of the most collectible and hardest-to-access producers in Napa Valley.

The 2022 growing season in Napa Valley became known among winemakers as “the tale of two harvests.” A mild, benign spring and summer — following winter rains that had finally broken a three-year drought — gave way abruptly to a brutal Labor Day heat wave in early September, when temperatures in parts of the valley soared past 115°F over several consecutive days. Growers who had already brought in fruit before the heat, or who had invested in shade cloth and misting to protect their vines, came through in strong shape; a bout of rain in mid-September then forced a pause before a mild, extended October allowed the remaining fruit to finish ripening at a more measured pace. At Morgan’s Way, this combination produced a wine of real concentration and structure, with critics noting its firm, ripe tannin backbone and layered fruit — a vintage that rewarded the estate’s meticulous site selection and its long tradition of hand-sorting for only the finest lots.
