Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2019 Scarecrow hits the ground running with bold expressions of crème de cassis, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries plus hints of dried herbs, tilled soil and crushed rocks with a fragrant undercurrent of Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with layer upon layer of tightly packed mineral-sparked black fruit flavors, framed by super plush tannins and absolutely seamless freshness, finishing long, long, long. This expression of the venerable J.J. Cohn vineyard—including vines planted in 1945 by John Daniel and dry farmed—is pure magic. (LPB)

Pure perfection from Napa Valley, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is, as always, all Cabernet Sauvignon from an incredible site in Rutherford that spent 21 months in 70% new French oak. Incredible aromatics of crème de cassis, darker currants, smoke, tobacco, and assorted floral notes all define the bulk of the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional, layered texture, ultra-fine tannins, and perfect balance. This is such a magical site, and this wine consistently checks in with the greatest wines of the world. It already offers pleasure yet should have 30 years of overall longevity. Hats off to winemaker Celia Welch and the team at Scarecrow.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon towers in this vintage. A Cabernet of majestic proportion and soaring intensity, the 2019 dazzles from start to finish. The pedigree of this Rutherford site comes through loud and clear. Wild cherry, leather, blood orange, tobacco and earthy nuances lend complexity, but it is really the textures and overall balance that are most impressive. This luxurious, opulent Cabernet is a real head-turner and without question one of the highlights of the year. Don’t miss it. (AG)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Scarecrow is an extremely limited-production Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that holds legendary status among collectors worldwide. Its prestige is rooted in its exceptional lineage, stemming from the historic J.J. Cohn Estate vineyard in the heart of the Rutherford AVA.
The Legacy of J.J. Cohn The vineyard where Scarecrow is produced was originally part of the famed Inglenook Estate, purchased by John Daniel, Jr. The property was acquired by Hollywood executive John “J.J.” Cohn in 1943. This estate is home to some of the oldest continually farmed Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Napa Valley, many of which are believed to be original pre-Prohibition Inglenook clones. These ancient, dry-farmed vines yield very low quantities of highly concentrated, pedigreed fruit.
The Birth of Scarecrow In 2003, a portion of the Cohn vineyard was allocated to founding the Scarecrow label, named for the figure from The Wizard of Oz, a movie J.J. Cohn produced. The wine is a testament to the Rutherford Bench terroir, celebrated for producing powerful Cabernets that exhibit the distinct “Rutherford Dust” signature—a complex mineral and earth quality.
Winemaking and Style The wine is a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon known for its immense concentration, dense structure, and extraordinary elegance. It is crafted to be powerful yet balanced, displaying rich black fruit, floral notes, dark chocolate, and a silky, opulent texture that evolves over decades. Production is intentionally kept microscopic, contributing directly to its rarity and status as one of the world’s most sought-after and expensive wines.
Scarecrow releases a limited portfolio of wines, including the flagship Scarecrow and M. Étain. The estate also occasionally produces the highly sought-after Toto’s Opium Dream, crafted from the “Old Men” vines and often offered as a rare auction lot.
