The 2014 Bonnes-Mares from Christophe Roumier is a stunning young wine. The great nose soars from the glass in a very vibrant blend of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, woodsmoke, incipient gamebird, violets, mustard seed, a magically complex base of soil and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and rock solid at the core, with that inimitable combination of sappy fruit and stunning transparency that make the very best 2014s undeniably profound wines. The finish is very, very long, ripely tannic and seamless, with stunning latent energy and magical potential. Just add fifteen years bottle age et voila! (Drink between 2030-2100)

The 2014 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a fragrant, floral bouquet with touches of blueberry, violet, wet limestone and effervescent blood orange. There is simply wonderful delineation here. The palate is very well structured, linear and strict in accordance with the vintage, driving acidity here maintaining the freshness with superb minerality on the finish. Oh yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. (NM)

Deep, full, dark red colour, a solid powerful fruit begins to emerge, this has exceptional density and a brilliantly interwoven texture. Not as flamboyant as some, it nonetheless builds beautifully. It is not the most self-consciously concentrated, but very finely constructed.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, this legendary estate in Chambolle-Musigny has evolved into one of the most revered names in the Côte de Nuits. After Georges began bottling his own wine—a rarity at the time—the domaine’s reputation for purity and structural elegance grew under his son Jean-Marie and subsequently his grandson, Christophe, who took the reins in 1982. The Roumier holding in the Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is particularly significant, spanning 1.6 hectares of vines that straddle both the “terres blanches” (white marl) and “terres rouges” (red clay) soils. Christophe Roumier is known for a non-interventionalist approach that prioritizes old vines and low yields, typically employing a percentage of whole-cluster fermentation to enhance the aromatic complexity and longevity of this muscular, terroir-driven wine.

The 2014 vintage in Burgundy is remembered as a year of resilience and ultimate triumph for Pinot Noir. The growing season was marked by a turbulent summer, including a significant hailstrike in June and a cool, damp July that slowed ripening and required fastidious vineyard management to prevent disease. However, a “miracle” September brought warm, dry northern winds that concentrated flavors and allowed the grapes to reach optimal phenolic maturity while preserving vibrant acidity. In the hands of Christophe Roumier, the 2014 Bonnes-Mares emerged as a sophisticated and energetic expression of the site. It balances the natural power of the Grand Cru with the bright, crystalline red fruit profile characteristic of the vintage, offering deep notes of wild blueberry, peony, and crushed stones, all framed by the signature Roumier silkiness and a firm mineral spine.
