Ratings & Tasting Notes:

97 points — Vinous (Antonio Galloni)
Graphite, lavender, mint, liquorice and plums literally jump out of the glass. Vibrant and powerful, the 2013 is endowed with striking nuance for a wine of its size.

95 points — Wine Advocate (Robert Parker)
Celebrating its 40th anniversary vintage, Parker suggests the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Stag’s Leap Vineyard Estate-Grown may be one of the all-time great offerings from this vineyard.

92 points — Wine Enthusiast (February 2017)
Marking the producer’s 40th vintage since the success of the Paris Tasting, this continues the thread of power and grace, combining bright, dusty red currant and chocolate-covered cherry within soft, integrated tannin. Full-bodied, with a velvety touch to the texture and noticeable structure.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was founded in 1970, when Warren Winiarski bought a 44-acre block in what is now the Stags Leap District after tasting a homemade wine from his neighbour Nathan Fay’s vineyard. The old vines were replaced with Cabernet Sauvignon and the parcel renamed S.L.V. Six years later, three-year-old vines from that vineyard produced a 1973 Cabernet that bested several of Bordeaux’s greatest growths in the 1976 blind tasting known as the Judgment of Paris — a result that put California on the world’s winemaking map, and a bottle that now resides in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

This bottling marks the fortieth anniversary of that victory. Released in May 2016 with a commemorative label replicating the original 1973 S.L.V. design, it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard, drawn principally from blocks 2A, 3B, 3A and 1A, each vinified and aged separately for 21 months in 90% new French oak before blending. Harvest ran from 27 September to 8 October 2013, the first vintage for winemaker Marcus Notaro, in a year of near-perfect conditions widely held to be among Napa’s finest of the decade. The wine is full-bodied and layered, with black currant, wild berry, plum, date and red stone fruit over graphite, lavender, mint, liquorice, vanilla, dark chocolate, rose petal, iron and smoke. Powerful and earthy, its structured tannins, rich fruit and pleasing minerality carry a bold but silky finish and point clearly toward long ageing.
