Another classic Cabernet Sauvignon from the Golitzin’s, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard comes from the dry, windswept Red Mountain AVA and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a big, structured effort that offers lots of minerality and dusty earth in its blackcurrants, black cherry liqueur, smoked earth, licorice and charred-meat-driven bouquet. Firm, focused and tight, this has closed down substantially since I tasted it from barrel, yet has serious concentration, lots of tannin and a great finish. (JD)

Cult Wines International Notes:

The 2012 Quilceda Creek Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a blockbuster release from a “near-perfect” Washington growing season, celebrated for its extraordinary power and ripening. Sourced primarily from the high-density Galitzine Vineyard (97%) with a small addition of fruit from the Wallula Vineyard (3%), this wine exemplifies the intensity of the Red Mountain AVA. The 2012 vintage benefited from a cool spring followed by consistent, warm summer temperatures, allowing the fruit to achieve full phenolic maturity. This resulted in a wine that possesses the massive “punch-in-the-face” tannins typical of Red Mountain, but with the refined, viscous mouthfeel that defines Paul Golitzin’s winemaking style.

Aromatically, the 2012 Galitzine is a sensory powerhouse, offering a “kaleidoscope” of dark cherry, cassis, and raspberry compote, layered with savory complexions of ginger, soy, smoke, and anise. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated, displaying a “3-D texture” with flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate, and mocha that are pinned by a distinct mineral streak and graphite edge. Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak, it maintains a remarkable balance between its hedonistic weight and its structural grip. Critics have lauded it as one of the best Galitzine bottlings produced, frequently awarding it scores of 97–99 points. While it was youthfully imploded and tight upon release, it has now entered a prime drinking window and possesses the structural integrity to continue evolving in the cellar through 2035.
