Cakebread Cellars was founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread, who purchased a 22-acre property on the border of the Oakville and Rutherford AVAs — a prime stretch of Napa Valley real estate. The family name itself has old Norse and English roots, tracing back to a term for a baker of fine breads and cakes. Today the winery remains family-run, led by the next generation, and has built a reputation as one of Napa’s most consistent producers of terroir-driven, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2005 growing season in Napa Valley is generally remembered as a cooler, later vintage, giving the resulting wines a more structured, tannic character in their youth compared to some of the riper years around it. Early reviews of this bottling described it as “tightly wound,” needing real patience before opening up. Now approaching two decades of age, the wine has settled into full maturity, offering the kind of tertiary complexity — softened tannins, dried fruit, and depth — that patient, structure-driven vintages like this one are built to reward.
