Showing less age and more fruit than a bottle opened six months earlier, and drinking beautifully. Medium-bodied and elegant with a classically Margaux aroma, given added interest by nearly twenty years of bottle age. Called “a charming Margaux” from a château the taster feels is underappreciated.

Less sediment than expected, and quite acidic on opening. After a two-hour decant, remarkably fruit-forward — plummy and red-fruited, with some sweetness and a succulent texture. Not a complex wine, but two decades of age have given it real depth. “Worth picking up and drinking.”

La Gurgue is a small estate of roughly ten hectares sitting in the heart of the Margaux appellation, on deep gravel and coarse sand over limestone, with plots at Curton that adjoin the vineyards of Château Margaux itself. In the eighteenth century the land belonged to the parish of Margaux and was sold off during the Revolution; two successive mayors of the village later owned it, one of whom, Camille Lenoir, briefly lent it his name before it reverted to La Gurgue. The modern chapter began in 1978, when Jacques Merlaut bought a nearly abandoned property and handed it to his daughter Bernadette Villars, who replanted the vineyard and rebuilt the cellar. A decade later a panel of fifty tasters named it one of the ten most typical wines of Margaux, alongside eight classified growths. Claire Villars-Lurton has run the estate since 1993, and it is vinified in the cellars of third-growth Château Ferrière.
2000 is one of the celebrated modern vintages of Bordeaux, a warm, dry summer that ripened Cabernet Sauvignon fully across the Left Bank. In Margaux that showed as perfume as much as power, and community tasters have consistently found this bottling medium-bodied and elegant, with a classically Margaux nose, plummy red fruit that stays surprisingly forward for its age, and tannins that have fully resolved into a finish carrying notes of tea. Give it a couple of hours in a decanter; more than one taster has noted it takes time to open. Drinking beautifully now.
