Ratings & Tasting Notes:
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a dense purple color with boisterous, sweet, spicy, new oak, licorice, and olive notes. This flamboyant wine tastes lighter than I would have expected for a 1997. In the mouth, it reveals medium body, sweet jammy cherry fruit, and a soft finish…By the way, the Alexander Valley cuvees are always 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
International Wine Cellar
Ruby-red, with a hint of development at the rim. Classic California cabernet aromas of blackcurrant, tar and menthol. Began slightly lean and herbaceous but seemed to put on weight and gain in texture as it opened in the glass. Firm acids are a bit tart but not quite spiky. Finishes firmly tannic, with a faint greenness and a note of coconutty sweet oak. (ST)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Silver Oak is one of the most recognizable and highly-regarded wineries in California, famous for its unwavering dedication to producing only two wines: a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and an Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1972 by entrepreneur Raymond Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, the winery’s philosophy was to produce a single-minded style of wine with a focus on consistency, quality, and age-ability.
What truly sets Silver Oak apart is its unique approach to aging, which has become its signature style. Unlike many wineries that prefer French oak, Silver Oak ages its wine exclusively in American oak barrels. This imparts a distinctive character to the wines, featuring notes of coconut, vanilla, and spice, which complement the rich, dark fruit flavors of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is so committed to this style that they own their own cooperage, The Oak Cooperage, ensuring complete control over the quality of their barrels.
The winery has two state-of-the-art facilities: one in Oakville, Napa Valley, and another in Healdsburg, Alexander Valley. Each winery produces a wine from its respective appellation, allowing for a clear expression of the unique terroir of each region. Silver Oak’s wines are known for being approachable and enjoyable upon release, yet they also have a proven track record of aging gracefully for decades, making them a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts.
