Ruby in the glass with a fine nose of currant and shoe leather. Asian spice and further currant on the palate, closing with medium-length tannins. Rated the standout among three mid-priced Bordeaux in the flight.

Château Greysac sits in the hamlet of Bégadan, in the northern Médoc just above Saint-Estèphe, in a manor house dating to the 1700s. For many years the property belonged to Baron François de Gunzburg, and in 1975 it passed to the Agnelli family, who invested heavily in vineyard and cellar and turned Greysac into one of the northern Médoc’s best-known names — a Cru Bourgeois admitted to the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux in 1982, and for decades one of the most reliably found Bordeaux labels on American restaurant lists. The blend leans on Merlot from the region’s clay-and-gravel soils, filled out with Cabernet Sauvignon and small portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate passed to Jean Guyon of Domaine Rollan de By in 2012.
1997 was an uneven, early-ripening year in Bordeaux, and its wines were soft, forward and generous from the outset rather than built for the long haul. That made them a pleasure to drink young, and the survivors now offer something increasingly hard to find: a genuinely mature Médoc at an accessible price. Community tasters have described a ruby wine turning brown at the rim, with currant, earth, warm spice and a distinct note of old leather over medium tannins. Nearly three decades on, expect that tertiary character to dominate — dried fruit, cedar, tobacco leaf and forest floor, with the structure fully melted away. A bottle for a birth-year dinner, and one to open rather than keep.
