The 1996 growing season in Napa Valley was a high-stakes narrative of extreme weather and dramatic climatic shifts, universally remembered by vintners as a lower-yielding, highly concentrated vintage. Following a mild, wet winter that provided deep soil hydration, a steady spring was suddenly interrupted in May by severe, unseasonable rainstorms that drenched the vines during the crucial flowering and fruit set phases, naturally thinning the potential crop load. A highly variable summer followed, punctuated by intense late-season heat waves in August and September that accelerated sugar levels and demanded meticulous canopy management to protect the clusters. Fortunately, the low-yielding vines naturally focused all their energy into a smaller number of clusters, resulting in thick-skinned, tiny berries packed with intense phenolic concentration and excellent structural acidity.
