Meyney occupies one of the finest natural positions in Saint-Estèphe: a gravel ridge directly above the Gironde estuary, sharing its little hill with Château Montrose. The estuary moderates temperature and keeps frost away, and beneath the gravel runs a seam of blue clay close to three metres thick, a geology otherwise associated with the great estates of Pomerol. It is among the oldest properties in the Médoc, founded as a religious house by the Feuillants, a Cistercian congregation, with vines planted here around 1660. The Cordier family bought Meyney in 1917 and held it for most of the twentieth century, making the wine with the same team that looked after Gruaud Larose. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot and a share of Petit Verdot that gives Meyney its characteristic leather and musk with age. It has long been the appellation’s great overachiever, regularly measured against classified growths.

1994 promised a great deal before September rain arrived during harvest, and the wines that emerged were firm and unyielding in youth, needing patience rather than offering charm. Cabernet-based Saint-Estèphe on clay handled that year better than most, and three decades have now done the work the vintage demanded. Expect a deep garnet core turning brick, with cassis and dark plum dried into cedar, tobacco, leather, graphite and damp earth, the tannins finally resolved and the structure holding the finish. Decant an hour and serve with red meat.
