Cult Wines International Notes:
The 1989 Chateau de Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone is a storied expression of the Perrin family legacy, whose stewardship of the estate dates back to the early 20th century. While the estate is world-renowned for its Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Coudoulet vineyard is located just across the A7 motorway, sharing the same distinctive Galets Roules or large rounded stones that provide exceptional drainage and heat retention. This specific terroir, combined with a commitment to biodynamic farming that began long before it was an industry standard, allows the Coudoulet to mirror the complexity and aging potential of its more famous neighbor.
The 1989 growing season is remembered as one of the greatest of the century in the Southern Rhone, characterized by an exceptionally hot and dry summer. The conditions led to an early harvest of perfectly ripened fruit with high sugar concentrations and thick skins, resulting in wines of immense power, structure, and aromatic depth. This vintage allowed the blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, and Cinsault to reach a level of concentration rarely seen in the Cotes du Rhone appellation. Decades later, the 1989 Coudoulet remains a testament to the vintage’s intensity, offering a profile rich in dark fruit, earthy leather, and Provençal herbs. It stands as a historic example of how meticulous vineyard management and a legendary climate can elevate a regional wine into a profound, collector-grade experience.
