Balanced and lively, with aromas of plum, mint, flowers and shells. Full-bodied and velvety, with a very good but slightly one-dimensional fruit structure and a long finish.–Georges de Latour Private Reserve vertical. (JS)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Beaulieu Vineyard, often referred to simply as BV, holds a legendary status in the Napa Valley as a pioneer of premium California Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1900 by Georges de Latour and his wife Fernande in Rutherford, the estate survived Prohibition by producing sacramental wine. The winery truly entered its golden era in 1938 with the arrival of Andre Tchelistcheff, a Russian-born enologist who revolutionized winemaking in the region. He introduced small oak barrel aging and cold fermentation, helping to define the Private Reserve label which was named in honor of the founder. By the mid-20th century, BV Georges de Latour had become the benchmark for Napa Valley excellence, frequently served at White House state dinners and recognized globally for its distinctive Rutherford Dust profile.

The 1986 growing season in Napa Valley was characterized by significant climatic shifts that tested the skill of vineyard managers. The year began with an exceptionally wet February, including heavy floods that saturated the soil. However, a warm and consistent spring led to an early budbreak and successful flowering. The summer months remained mild without the intense heatwaves that often plague the valley, allowing for a slow and steady accumulation of sugars while preserving vital acidity. Harvest began earlier than usual under ideal conditions, producing fruit with excellent concentration and structural integrity. The 1986 Private Reserve emerged as a classic expression of the vintage, noted for its balance, firm tannins, and remarkable aging potential.
