Cult Wines International Notes:
Château Phélan Ségur, located in the prestigious Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, carries a rich history that began in the early 19th century. The estate was established by Bernard Phélan, an Irishman who migrated to France and combined two older properties, Clos de Garamey and Domaine Ségur de Cabanac. Over the generations, the Phélan family meticulously refined the estate’s viticultural practices, building the iconic Palladian-style château that remains a landmark of the region today. By the time the 1981 vintage was produced, the estate was under the stewardship of the Delon family, who maintained its reputation for producing robust, long-lived wines that exemplify the powerful yet elegant character of Saint-Estèphe terroir.
The 1981 growing season in Bordeaux is remembered as a year of resilience and classical proportions. Following a series of difficult years in the late 1970s, 1981 provided a more balanced climatic profile. The spring was relatively mild, leading to a successful flowering period. However, the summer was characterized by periods of drought and high heat, which concentrated the sugars and phenolic compounds in the grapes. While heavy rains arrived in early October during the harvest, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot at Phélan Ségur had achieved sufficient ripeness and thick skins to withstand the moisture. The resulting wine is noted for its structured tannins, refined cedar aromatics, and a balanced acidity that has allowed it to age gracefully over several decades.
