Cult Wines International Notes:
Château Pétrus is an iconic and highly-coveted red wine estate located in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France, renowned globally for producing one of the world’s most expensive and prestigious wines. What sets Pétrus apart is its minuscule 11.4-hectare vineyard situated on a unique plateau of dense, iron-rich blue clay (known as crasse de fer). This rare terroir is perfectly suited to its primary and now 100% Merlot composition, allowing the grapes to achieve extraordinary ripeness, concentration, and a signature velvety texture while maintaining fresh acidity. The estate, famously guided by the Moueix family since the mid-20th century, practices rigorous quality control, including very low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting, which results in a tiny annual production of around 30,000 bottles, with no second wine. This limited output, combined with perennial critical acclaim and the wine’s immense aging potential (often developing notes of truffle, spice, and dark fruit over decades), fuels its mythical status and astronomical prices, often surpassing even the officially classified First Growths of the Médoc.
