Cult Wines International Notes:

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste, a distinguished Fifth Growth estate in the 1855 classification, is situated on the elevated Bages plateau in Pauillac. The winery traces its origins to the 16th century and derived its name from the local puy or hillock and the Lacoste family, who steered the property for over a century. During the production of the 1973 vintage, the estate was under the colorful stewardship of Raymond Dupin, a legendary bon vivant who maintained the property until its acquisition by the Borie family in 1978. The vineyard is celebrated for its deep gravel soils, which provide the essential drainage and mineral structure that define its classic Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant profile.

The 1973 growing season in Bordeaux was characterized by significant climatic challenges that tested the resilience of Pauillac producers. While the cycle began with a promising and successful budburst and flowering during a warm spring, the summer transition brought a shift to cold and wet conditions. The months of July and August were plagued by persistent rains and a lack of sunshine, which hampered the concentration of sugars and phenolic ripeness in the grapes. Despite the unfavorable summer weather, the high gravel content of the Grand Puy Lacoste terroir helped mitigate the excess moisture. The resulting harvest yielded a high volume of fruit, though the wines from this period were generally noted for their lighter, more elegant style compared to the power of more heralded vintages.
