Ratings & Tasting Notes:

97 points Vinous

A wine of magnificent nuance, precision, and crystalline understatement, this release remains an absolute monument of pure grace. Time has beautifully softened some of its youthful contours, but the primary core of flavors remains spectacularly fresh and vibrant. Medium in body, it is completely effortless on the palate, striking a harmonious, sublime, and totally sensual balance that proves “the 2004 will appeal most to readers who find the 2002 and 2003 too exuberant. There is a lot to like in the glass.” Antonio Galloni, July 2018

96 points James Suckling

Supremely drinkable and just beginning to spread its wings at nearly fifteen years of age, this bottle showcases an excellent, flamboyant roundness. Rich layers of cream and crystallized fruits are seamlessly joined by savory undertones of oatmeal, warm toast, and fresh oyster shell. A gorgeous ripeness is held perfectly in check by a firm, counterbalancing acidity, offering a finish that is “fluid, elongated and texturally very compelling. A vin de plaisir.” James Suckling, November 2018

96 points John Gilman

Another great classic in the making, this vintage delivers excellent complexity, a wonderfully refined mousse, and superb focus. The beautiful, high-toned bouquet reveals a youthful constellation of green apple, menthol, salty minerality, white flowers, and deep marine brine, accented by initial hints of developing crème pâtissière. It is exceptionally racy and pure, closing with “superb focus and grip on the very long and energetic finish.” John Gilman, May 2018

95 points Wine Spectator

There is a fantastic sense of tension paired with seamless grace in this deftly balanced version. A rich and smoky vein of crisp minerality underscores expressive, mature flavors of poached apple, honey, and sun-dried black cherry, accented beautifully by hints of roasted almond and warm coffee liqueur. It displays an exquisite, lingering silhouette that shows “a fine frame for the flavors.” Alison Napjus, December 2013

Cult Wines International Notes:

Dom Pérignon stands as the ultimate, globally revered archetype of luxury prestige cuvée Champagne, originally created by Moët & Chandon as an avant-garde tribute to the legendary Benedictine monk who pioneered early sparkling winemaking techniques. Crafted exclusively as a vintage-dated wine from only the most exceptional years, Dom Pérignon is celebrated for its iconic, reductive style which balances equal proportions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to achieve a distinct sensation of athletic tension and weightless density. Launched in late 2013, the ultra-collectible “Creator Edition” represents a high-profile, artistic collaboration with legendary American contemporary artist Jeff Koons. For this limited-edition release, Koons designed a visually striking, deep dark-metallic gift box and bottle label featuring stylized, multi-colored graphics adapted from his monumental, mirror-polished “Balloon Venus” sculpture, perfectly marrying modern fine art with elite viticulture.

The 2004 growing season in Champagne is widely remembered as a historic, incredibly abundant triumph of natural generosity, providing an elegant, classic counterweight to the brutally torrid, frost-thinned 2003 harvest. Following a cool, gentle spring that allowed for a smooth and uniform budburst, a temperate summer progressed without any major weather difficulties or heat spikes. The defining signature of the vintage arrived in September with several weeks of intense, dry heat that beautifully concentrated the massive, healthy crop load just before picking commenced on September 24th. Guided by former long-time Chef de Cave Richard Geoffroy, the 2004 base blend achieved a pristine balance of natural ripeness and razor-sharp, linear acidity. Over its extensive decade-long maturation on the lees, the 2004 Creator Edition has evolved into a spellbinding, highly chiseled masterpiece, marrying an exotic bouquet of powdered cocoa, toasted almonds, and lily-of-the-valley with a creamy, mineral-veined palate that promises decades of cellar potential.
