Released only in magnum and a blend of the single vineyards (Christophe continues to keep the vineyards that compose the blend a secret), the 2019 Syrah Wallah Wallah Special #13 offers a textbook Rocks bouquet of meaty red and blue fruits, iron, baking spices, dried herbs, and pepper. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, plush, seamless beauty that has remarkable balance, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It drinks brilliantly already with a decant, yet I have no doubt it will still being singing at age 20.

A lovely nose of ground and whole spice, ripe strawberry, red cherry and tarragon. Medium-to full-bodied with slightly firm tannins and driving acidity. So much lovely peppery character here. A bit of mineral nuance, too, adding some earthiness and articulation to the ripe-fruit profile. Hints of spice. Totally delicious. Only in magnum. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Only bottled in magnum, the 2019 Wallah Wallah Syrah Special is in its 13th vintage and boasts classic Syrah tones with savory and spicy red fruit essences. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is playful with elegant flavors of peppercorn, red and purple flowers and hints of herbs to Provence before juicy and ripe raspberry and black plum notes appear in the mouth. Displaying a balanced structure with succulent acidity and fine-grained tannins, the Syrah delivers a fantastic food-friendly drinking experience that will go the distance. (AM)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Cayuse Vineyards, established in 1997 by Frenchman Christophe Baron, is a pioneering force in the Walla Walla Valley, renowned for discovering and capitalizing on the cobblestone-laden soils of the ancient Walla Walla riverbed. Baron recognized that these stony “Galets” mirrored the terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, forcing the vines to struggle and yield wines with an unmistakable, deeply savory, and mineral-driven character. The “Wallah Wallah Special Series” represents a unique facet of Cayuse’s lineup; it is a proprietary, magnums-only Syrah release that is uniquely created as a secret blend of the estate’s single vineyards, with the exact components kept confidential by the winery. Aged in French oak and crafted with strict biodynamic farming principles, this special cuvée acts as a masterfully woven tapestry of the estate’s distinct parcels, delivering the highly coveted “Rocks District” signature profile of smoked meats, olive brine, and crushed stone on a grand, cellar-worthy scale.
The 2019 growing season in the Walla Walla Valley offered a cooler, more measured pace compared to the intense heat spikes of previous years. A long, moisture-rich spring delayed bud break, giving way to a temperate summer that allowed for steady, slow sugar accumulation and uniform canopy development. Crucially, a stable and dry autumn extended the “hang time” for the fruit, allowing the grapes to achieve flawless phenolic maturity without losing their vibrant, structural acidity. This balanced climate was ideal for the secret components of the Wallah Wallah Special #13 Syrah, resulting in a wine celebrated for its incredible energy, seamless, plush tannins, and aromatic clarity. The 2019 vintage highlights a more elegant, savory, and fresh expression of Cayuse’s signature funk, showing a striking balance of red and blue fruits laced with iron, pepper, and dried herbs.
