Ratings & Tasting Notes:
Jancis Robinson
Quite deeply coloured and strong red notes at the core still. Fresh and lightly herbal, even a little note of pepper and capsicum and fresh cedar but also some undergrowth and a delicate meatiness and sweet leafy red fruit. That meatiness follows through on the palate but it is smooth and surprisingly rich still. Elegant and scented on the mid palate. With time, more peppery and a touch of coffee. A final grip shows it is not over yet. (JH) (3/2010)
Wine Advocate
A light earthy nose, moderate definition, cedar, cigar box, rather dusty in fact but not inoffensive. The palate is medium-bodied with light raspberry leaf, cedar, tobacco and a touch of black pepper, a little sharpness coming in towards the finish, nice weight although it runs out of puff towards the finish. Still, there is a sense of grace and elegance here. Moderate length. (NM) (7/2010)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Chateau Meyney is one of the oldest estates in the Saint-Estephe region of Bordeaux, with a history dating back to 1662 when it was established as a convent. For several centuries, the property was managed by Cistercian monks who recognized the exceptional potential of its terroir, which sits on a high hill overlooking the Gironde estuary. The estate eventually passed into the hands of the Luetkens family after the French Revolution and was later acquired by Desire Cordier in 1919. Under the Cordier family’s stewardship, the winery gained a reputation for producing robust, long-lived wines that often rivaled those of the classified growths, despite Meyney’s status as a Cru Bourgeois.
The 1982 growing season is remembered as a legendary turning point for Bordeaux, characterized by nearly perfect conditions that produced opulent and concentrated wines. A successful and early flowering in June set the stage for an abundant crop. The summer was exceptionally warm and dry, allowing the grapes to reach optimum phenolic ripeness with high sugar levels and thick skins. September provided continued sunshine, ensuring a smooth harvest of healthy fruit. In 1982, Chateau Meyney benefited immensely from its proximity to the river, which regulated temperatures and helped the vines thrive in the heat. The resulting wine is celebrated for its rich structure, deep fruit profile, and remarkable aging potential, serving as a classic example of what this historic estate can achieve in a stellar vintage.
