Cult Wines International Notes:

Château Calon-Ségur is the northernmost classified growth in the Médoc and one of the oldest estates in Saint-Estèphe, with roots tracing back to the Gallo-Roman era. Its modern identity was forged in the 18th century by Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Lafite and Latour. Despite his vast holdings, he famously declared, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon,” a sentiment immortalized by the heart-shaped label that adorns every bottle. For most of the 20th century, the estate was owned by the Capbern-Gasqueton family, who maintained a traditional, non-interventionist approach. This resulted in a “classic” style of Saint-Estèphe: powerful, structured, and built for immense longevity. The 1983 vintage represents this traditional era, reflecting the estate’s deep gravelly soils and its reputation for producing wines that require patient cellaring to reveal their profound complexity.

The 1983 growing season in Bordeaux was a story of redemption, following a summer that was initially fraught with humidity and heat. After a successful flowering in June, the region experienced a tropical, damp August that raised concerns about rot and mildew. However, a “miraculous” September and October followed, bringing warm, dry, and sunny conditions that allowed the Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen perfectly. In Saint-Estèphe, the 1983 vintage was particularly successful, with many critics initially favoring it over the more famous 1982 due to its superior structure and balance. The harvest yielded fruit with high sugar levels and firm tannins, resulting in a wine defined by its dark fruit profile and a sturdy, “old-school” backbone. Decades later, the 1983 Calon-Ségur remains a standout of the decade, celebrated for its persistence, aromatic grace, and quintessential Médoc character.
