Château La Grave à Pomerol Trigant de Boisset, often referred to simply as Château La Grave, is a historic estate located on the western slopes of the Pomerol plateau. The property’s modern legacy is deeply intertwined with the Moueix family, the legendary vintners behind Pétrus and Trotanoy, who acquired the estate in 1971. Christian Moueix renamed the property to include “Trigant de Boisset”—the name of the previous owners—to honor its heritage. The vineyard is characterized by its uniquely gravelly soils (hence the name “La Grave”), which distinguish it from the heavier clay found in the center of the appellation. Under the Moueix stewardship, the estate became known for producing a refined, elegant expression of Merlot that prioritizes finesse and silky textures over raw power, solidifying its place as a sophisticated “insider” favorite among Pomerol collectors.

The 1982 growing season is widely regarded as the most significant vintage of the 20th century for Bordeaux, characterized by a perfect alignment of climatic factors. A warm and successful flowering in June set the stage for a large, healthy crop. The summer was exceptionally hot and dry, but without the scorching extremes that cause vines to shut down, allowing for a steady and complete ripening of the fruit. Harvesting at La Grave took place under magnificent conditions in mid-September, yielding Merlot of unprecedented sugar levels and phenolic maturity. The 1982 vintage for this estate is celebrated for its opulent, plush fruit and remarkably supple tannins, marking the beginning of the “modern era” where Pomerol achieved global superstardom for its decadent and approachable style.
