The Belair 1982 has a strict nose that takes time to unwind. There is something almost Pauillac-like about this Saint Emilion at first, although I would have liked more fruit intensity to back up the minerality. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, fleshy entry and attractive tertiary notes. (NM)
Cult Wines International Notes:
Château Belair, located in Saint-Émilion, is an estate of profound historical significance, with roots stretching back to the 14th century when it was owned by the Robert de Knollys family. Long regarded as the spiritual “premier” of the region, the property occupies a prized position on the limestone plateau adjacent to Château Ausone. For much of the 20th century, including the 1982 vintage, the estate was under the dedicated stewardship of the Dubois-Challon family. Their commitment to traditional viticulture and a restrained, elegant winemaking style ensured that Belair remained a bastion of classical Saint-Émilion finesse. While the estate was later acquired by Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix and renamed Château Bélair-Monange, the 1982 bottling remains a landmark representative of the property’s original, historic identity and its storied terroir.
The 1982 growing season is etched in Bordeaux history as the vintage of the century, defined by a “miraculous” combination of yield and quality. After a successful and rapid flowering in June, the region experienced a summer of consistent, radiant heat and dry weather. These conditions allowed the Merlot and Cabernet Franc at Belair to achieve exceptional sugar levels and phenolic maturity without the hydric stress often associated with hot years. The harvest took place under clear skies in mid-September, producing fruit with a rare level of concentration and velvety tannins. In the cellar, the 1982 Belair benefited from the vintage’s natural opulence, resulting in a wine that transitioned from its typical austere youth into a lush, multi-layered masterpiece characterized by ripe red fruits and the distinct, chalky minerality of the Saint-Émilion plateau.
