Cult Wines International Notes:
Carpineto was founded in 1967 by Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo with the mission of producing world-class Chianti Classico, eventually expanding their expertise to the prestigious hills of Montalcino. The estate’s Brunello di Montalcino is a product of their “Appiano” estate, located in one of the highest elevations of the appellation. This high-altitude positioning is central to the Carpineto style, as the cooler nights and constant ventilation allow the Sangiovese Grosso grapes to maintain aromatic complexity and structural elegance. Over the decades, Carpineto has become synonymous with a philosophy that marries traditional Tuscan viticulture—such as long maceration periods and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels—with modern cellar techniques, resulting in a Brunello that is consistently praised for its longevity and traditional character.
The 2003 growing season in Tuscany is remembered as one of the most extreme and “solar” vintages in Italian history, characterized by a relentless summer heatwave that began in May and lasted through August. These record-breaking temperatures and a significant lack of rainfall accelerated the ripening process across the region, leading to an exceptionally early harvest. For many producers in Montalcino, the challenge was preventing the fruit from becoming over-ripe or losing its necessary acidity. Carpineto’s high-elevation vineyards proved to be a critical advantage during this torrid year, as the cooler microclimate at the top of the hills provided the vines with much-needed relief from the heat. This allowed the 2003 Brunello to achieve a rare level of opulent, dark fruit concentration and powerful, ripe tannins while retaining the structural balance required to evolve gracefully in the bottle.
