Perfumed and packed with fruit and spice aromas and flavors, this red exudes finesse and class. Cherry, strawberry, rose, licorice, mineral and a flash of bergamot are shaded with oak spice and this continues to expand on the palate to a seemingly endless finish. There are dense, refined tannins uplifting it all. Best from 2029 through 2047. From France. —B.S.

Cult Wines International Notes:

Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, though the estate’s roots in the Beaune vineyards trace back even further to the family’s purchase of the Clos des Ursules in 1826. The “Domaine Gagey” designation identifies specific family-owned parcels that entered the Jadot portfolio through the Gagey family, who have been integral to the house since André Gagey became managing director in 1962. Under the long-term stewardship of André and later his son Pierre-Henry Gagey—who retired just as the 2022 vintage was coming to market—the domaine has focused on preserving the distinct “climats” of Burgundy. The Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, a historic site in Morey-Saint-Denis with origins dating back to the 13th-century church of Saint-Denis de Vergy, is prized for its complex mosaic of limestone and iron-rich clay, which consistently produces wines of immense structural pedigree and refined elegance.

The 2022 vintage is widely regarded as a triumphant “gift” from nature for Burgundy, characterized by a growing season that successfully balanced high heat with unexpected freshness. Following several years of low yields due to frost and drought, 2022 provided a generous crop and a remarkably smooth ripening period. Despite a warm, dry summer that initially sparked fears of hydric stress, pivotal rainfall in June replenished the water tables and allowed the vines to flourish through a sunny August. At Louis Jadot, technical director Frédéric Barnier oversaw a harvest that yielded fruit with exceptional phenolic maturity and a surprising level of classic acidity. For a grand cru like Clos Saint-Denis, this temperate yet sunny season resulted in a wine that combines the natural power of the Morey-Saint-Denis terroir with a succulent, energetic profile, marking 2022 as one of the most balanced and complete vintages in recent memory.
