A new wine for Quilceda Creek, the 2019 Palengat Mach One Vineyard Clone 685 is made from 100% clone 685 Cabernet Sauvignon, entirely sourced from the Mach One vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. The wine is beautifully floral, featuring red and dark rose petal tones alongside black currants, black tea and exotic spices. The palate is deep, concentrated and sinfully good, layers of ripe black and blue fruits colliding with minerals, scorched earth, tar and menthol undertones. The plush texture, light salinity and wonderful length add to the enjoyment. This beautiful wine has another 20 years ahead of it. (OB)

Coming from the Mach One vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills, this new label is part of the clonal expression range that honors the family heritage. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Palengat Clone 685 begins with a bold expression of black and blue fruits on the firm, well-structured nose that emanates with elements of elegant oak. Full-bodied and with gobs of juicy, ripe, black raspberry and dark cherry tones, the palate overflows with flavors of savory herbs, bitter dark chocolate and a hint of smoke, followed by a delightful lift of roasted red bell pepper and fine-grained tannins across the mid-palate. The wine continues to evolve in the mouth over the long, winding and powerful finish. It’s still tight, so additional aging in the cellar will help before opening the bottle. Only 550 cases were produced. (AM) 95+

Cult Wines International Notes:

The 2019 Quilceda Creek Palengat Cabernet Sauvignon represents a significant turning point for this label, marking its transition from a Bordeaux-style blend to a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon single-clone bottling. This vintage is sourced entirely from the Mach One Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills, specifically utilizing Clone 685, which winemaker Paul Golitzin selected for its exceptional aromatic profile reminiscent of great Cabernet Franc. The 2019 growing season in Washington was characterized by above-average summer temperatures and historically low yields, which facilitated a remarkable concentration of flavor and structural intensity. Aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak from a single artisanal cooperage, this “new direction” for Palengat emphasizes a singular, high-definition expression of terroir and clonal purity that has earned it near-perfect scores from top critics.

On the sensory front, the 2019 Palengat is noted for its deep purple-black hue and an “incredibly perfumed” nose of blueberries, plums, and cassis, accented by exotic spices, lavender, and black tea. The palate is full-bodied and “sinfully good,” displaying a seamless, voluptuous texture where layers of black raspberry and dark cherry collide with mineral notes of graphite and scorched earth. Despite its massive concentration, the wine maintains a striking sense of elegance and lift, supported by fine-grained, dusty tannins and a touch of savory herbs and bitter chocolate. While it is undeniably powerful and built to evolve over the next two decades, its polished structure makes it remarkably approachable even in its youth.
