Cult Wines International Notes:

The 1990 Lisini Ugolaia Brunello di Montalcino is a monumental wine from one of Tuscany’s most storied and traditional estates, hailing from a 5-star vintage that is widely considered one of the greatest in the region’s history. This specific bottling comes from the “Ugolaia” cru, a small, 1.5-hectare vineyard situated in the southern part of Montalcino near Sant’Angelo in Colle. The winemaking approach here is steadfastly traditional; the wine is made from 100% Sangiovese, fermented in cement tanks and aged for nearly four years in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) rather than smaller French barriques. This method preserves the purity of the fruit while allowing the unique calcareous and clay-rich soils of the Ugolaia site to express a sense of place that is often described as “masculine” and robust yet profoundly elegant.

After more than three decades, the 1990 Ugolaia has matured into a complex, multi-layered masterpiece that highlights the longevity of traditional Brunello. It typically displays a deep ruby-garnet color and an expansive bouquet of dried black cherries, balsamic herbs, tobacco, and Mediterranean scrub, often accompanied by earthy notes of forest floor and truffle. On the palate, the wine is celebrated for its dense structure and “thick” mouthfeel, balanced by vibrant acidity and tannins that have evolved from powerful to velvety. While it is at a magnificent peak of maturity, well-stored bottles continue to show incredible freshness and persistence, making it a benchmark example of how a singular vineyard and a classic vintage can harmonize into a legendary Italian red.
