These days, tasting the legendary 1982 Bordeaux vintage is more rare from the Right Bank than the Left Bank, as smaller productions has meant there are less of them to go around. This is a real stand out, still delivering spice, tobacco, brambled raspberry and loganberry fruit, tertiary undergrowth and melted tannins. I amost picked the 2015 Figeac, one of my six 100 point wines given this year, but the 1982 stays in my memory as one of the most pleasurable moments of the past 12 months. And great to see in the year that Figeac was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A.

This is a wine that has been maligned over the years by a number of critics but I could never understand why. Perhaps there is a some bottle inconsistency? I drank a bottle last week in Shanghai at Fook Lam Moon restaurant with some friends and my girlfriend and it was wonderful, with dark chocolate, mushrooms and black truffle character that turned to dried fruits such as light prunes. It’s full-bodied with amazing decadent fruit and a dense palate. Soft textured, long and delicious. So rich and gorgeous. Drink or hold. It was excellent with the roasted chicken done in a Peking duck style.

This is actually a younger, more concentrated wine than the 1990. A dense plum/garnet color with a slight lightening at the edge is followed by a sensational Figeac nose of mint, fruitcake, Asian spices, gobs of sweet black and red fruits, and a smoky component in the background. Medium to full-bodied with lovely freshness, this 1982 appears to be fully mature, but it tasted the same a decade ago, and it should hold at this level for another 10-20 years. (RP)

Cult Wines International Notes:

Château Figeac is a historic and singularly distinctive Saint-Émilion estate, celebrated for producing wines of remarkable elegance, finesse, and longevity that stand apart from the appellation’s Merlot-dominant style. Its unique character is defined by a 41-hectare vineyard situated on three Günzian gravelly outcrops of quartz and flint, a soil composition more typical of the Médoc than the clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. This special terroir allows Figeac to plant a blend unusually high in the Cabernet varieties, with the composition being roughly 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot. This high Cabernet content imbues the wine with a pronounced structure, incredible aromatic complexity—showcasing notes of graphite, blackcurrant, cedar, and tobacco leaf—and a signature freshness that ensures exceptional aging potential. Under the long-time stewardship of the Manoncourt family and its current director, Frédéric Faye, Figeac employs a meticulous, modern yet traditional approach, including hand-harvesting, parcel-by-parcel vinification, and aging in 100% new French oak. Long classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B, the estate’s consistent quality and pedigree were officially recognized with its well-deserved promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the 2022 Saint-Émilion classification, solidifying its place among the elite wines of Bordeaux.
