Billecart-Salmon was founded in 1818 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, born from the marriage of Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, with Elisabeth’s brother Louis joining soon after as the house’s first winemaker. Over 200 years later, it remains one of the last major Champagne houses still independently family-owned, now led by seventh-generation Mathieu Roland-Billecart. The house is widely credited with pioneering modern rosé Champagne and is celebrated for a signature style built on elegance, freshness, and precision rather than power — a philosophy that has earned it a reputation among the most consistently refined producers in the region.
Unlike a vintage Champagne, Le Réserve is a non-vintage blend built from a base vintage layered with an extensive library of reserve wines — in recent releases, more than half the blend, drawn from as many as fifteen different vintages going back nearly two decades. This deep reserve library is central to Billecart-Salmon’s house style, smoothing out the character of any single growing season into a wine defined by consistency, complexity, and the signature freshness the house has built its reputation on across two centuries.
